EXPLORING THE QC: JOHN DEERE COMMONS & ROCKET PARK

This past weekend, we were looking for something fun for Quinn to do.  Lately, she's been coming home from daycare and wants to sit on her butt and watch YouTube for Kids for hours.  We aren't having it.  I wanted to take advantage of the weather and get out while we could since our Saturday was wide open.

I took to Facebook asking all my friends for suggestions on where to take a four year old (and her four month old brother).  They were all really good suggestions, some places we've taken her before, some new places we could try.  But they were all so costly.  Quinn is the type of person who can blow right through a museum at super sonic speed.  She blew through the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, in 45 minutes.  Some days I think it takes her longer to get ready and get out the door for our activities than she spends doing the activity.

We decided to head across the river to the John Deere Pavilion for our first visit.  How we've been living so close to it but haven't visited before is beyond me.  It's really neat in there...basically every farmers dream.  Plus, it's all completely free.  The coolest part is that everyone can climb up, explore and touch all the equipment.  There is a place where you can experiment with computer generated back hoes and excavators at a construction site.  It even estimates how much damage we were causing and money we were making.  I walked away after unsuccessfully dropping a load and causing $68 in damage.  I think Quinn may have racked up thousands in damage.

After exploring the pavilion, we headed back across the river to Iowa and took Quinn to her favorite park, Rocket Park.  It has a rubber like mat under the entire play ground so even though it was warm and messy everywhere else, the playground was pretty clean.  Chase received his first swing ride and got to go down the slide a few times with his sister.

If you live in, plan on visiting or are passing through the Quad Cities, I highly recommend checking out the John Deere Pavilion!

RECIPE: MONSTER COOKIE PROTEIN BALLS

In an effort to feel better about myself, both inside and out, I've been incorporating more clean and healthy options into my lifestyle.  I'd say diet but I'm not one to diet.  It's more about eating foods that actually taste good and are healthy versus just eating something because 'it's good for me'.  I'll watch what I eat but I'm not going to go crazy.

When I was pregnant with Quinn, 5 years ago, I developed this raging sweet tooth that unfortunately has never gone away.  So how does one suffice their sweet tooth and eat better at the same time?  PROTEIN BALLS!  Not just your ordinary protein ball but one in the form of the Monster Cookie and packed with super foods!  Who doesn't love that chocolate, peanut butter combination?  Well, I guess someone allergic to nuts probably wouldn't....

Anyways, these ball are legit!  They smell and taste like a Monster Cookie and they are just so good.  These will definitely curb those sweet cravings without hurting the waistline!

Recipe:

1/4 C. honey
1/2 C. peanut butter (natural, no sugar added)
1 C. quick oats
1 scoop/packet Vanilla Shakeology
Mini semi-sweet morsels and mini M&M's to taste

Combine honey and peanut butter together and then add oats and shakeology and mix well.  Add in chocolate morsels and M&M's.  Roll into one inch balls.  Chill in fridge until set.  Makes approximately 18 balls.

2016 GOALS

If you could choose one word that will describe your 2016, what would you choose?

My word is growth.

Whether it's my career, coaching business, personal development, kids, marriage, blog and so on.  I want to see growth in all areas.  I feel like every single day, I'm going through the motions and life is pretty status quo.  This year I want to see and do something different.  Get outside of my mundane life and make it an exceptional life or at the very least, a better one.

The breakdown:

Career/Coaching Business

Finish the AINS (Associate in Insurance) designation.  I started this 3 years ago, passed the first 3 classes with ease but haven't had the time or motivation to finish the Commercial portion.

Reach the next level in my coaching business.  Be a product of the product: finish 3 programs, start to finish and drink superfoods religiously.

Personal Development

Read 12 fun books and 12 personal development books.  I usually set a goal of a certain number of books for the year but I'm taking it up a notch by reading half of my total in personal development.

Kids

Do more creative projects with Quinn.

Take more time to spend quality one on one time with each kid.

Work through the Brain Quest workbook for Pre-K with Quinn.

Use more patience.  This one is going to be hard but it's something that I need to practice.

Marriage

Schedule in more date nights without the kids.  I could count on one hand alone the number of times we went out last year without the kids and I'd probably have a couple of fingers leftover.

Read a personal development book that will guide us through some marriage based activities.

Wake Up Earlier

Waking up is very serious struggle for me.  My kids typically sleep until 7:15 in the morning during the week, probably longer if I let them and around 8 on the weekends.  While this is great, it doesn't help me get out of bed.  I'm always in a rush in the mornings and waking up even 15 minutes earlier would be a big help.

Back Up Pictures

This is a project that I had for maternity leave that I never got around to.  I started it a few weekends ago before the holidays and never finished.  I will feel so much better knowing that I have an extra copy of my irreplaceable pictures around.

Blog

Blogging didn't exist for me the last couple of years and I want to change that.   I had loads of fun when I used to blog and I want to get back to a point of writing throughout the year.  I documented everything about my pregnancy, week by week with Quinn and even did monthly updates.  I have done zero documentation with Chase.  It makes me sad that I didn't document my pregnancy but I was really depressed during it (dang hormones) and blogging about my pregnancy experiences was the last thing I wanted to do.  I'm hoping to document more of Chase's life outside of the womb.  My goal is to write 10-15 times per month.

So, what are your goals for the New Year?

BOOKS I'VE BEEN READING LATELY

Is it just me or does this weather (20's here in Iowa...flurries every other day) make you start to hoard books and never want to go outside?  I find myself thinking I need to go to the library to get new books when I clearly have a stack of borrowed books at home, plus an additional array of books on the Kindle.  I guess this is where the term book nerd comes in to play.

I'm not the only one in this house though, Quinn has been reading up a storm.  She might not know exactly what is going on in the book but she can create some amazing stories on her own, just by looking at pictures.  That girl LOVES to read.  If we don't give her a few minutes each night to read on her own, we can almost be assured that a fit will ensue.  Kids these days...

Do you want to know something else?  I'm astounded when people tell me that they don't read, like ever.  Like they haven't picked up a book since high school.  I just want to shake them and make them realize all the great things that come in print.  I guess it shouldn't be my problem if they are missing out and they truly are.

I've been reading some pretty good books lately.

Losing It by Cora Carmack

Virginity.

Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible-- a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if that weren’t embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She’d left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.

I gave it 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.   It was predictable but I would definitely keep reading the series.

All We Ever Wanted Was Everything by Janelle Brown

When Paul Miller’s pharmaceutical company goes public, making his family IPO millionaires, his wife, Janice, is sure this is the windfall she’s been waiting years for — until she learns, via messengered letter, that her husband is divorcing her (for her tennis partner!) and cutting her out of the new fortune. Meanwhile, four hundred miles south in Los Angeles, the Millers’ older daughter, Margaret, has been dumped by her newly famous actor boyfriend and left in the lurch by an investor who promised to revive her fledgling post-feminist magazine, Snatch. Sliding toward bankruptcy and dogged by creditors, she flees for home where her younger sister Lizzie, 14, is struggling with problems of her own. Formerly chubby, Lizzie has been enjoying her newfound popularity until some bathroom graffiti alerts her to the fact that she’s become the school slut.

The three Miller women retreat behind the walls of their Georgian colonial to wage battle with divorce lawyers, debt collectors, drug-dealing pool boys, mean girls, country club ladies, evangelical neighbors, their own demons, and each other, and in the process they become achingly sympathetic characters we can’t help but root for, even as the world they live in epitomizes everything wrong with the American Dream.

4 out of 5 stars.  This book made me feel really good about my own life.  For having darker themes, the author kept the actual story pretty light, adding humor to everything.

This Is Where I Leave You - Jonathan Tropper

The death of Judd Foxman’s father marks the first time that the entire Foxman family—including Judd’s mother, brothers, and sister—have been together in years. Conspicuously absent: Judd’s wife, Jen, whose fourteen-month affair with Judd’s radio-shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public.

Simultaneously mourning the death of his father and the demise of his marriage, Judd joins the rest of the Foxmans as they reluctantly submit to their patriarch’s dying request: to spend the seven days following the funeral together. In the same house. Like a family.

As the week quickly spins out of control, longstanding grudges resurface, secrets are revealed, and old passions reawakened. For Judd, it’s a weeklong attempt to make sense of the mess his life has become while trying in vain not to get sucked into the regressive battles of his madly dysfunctional family. All of which would be hard enough without the bomb Jen dropped the day Judd’s father died: She’s pregnant.

4 out of 5 stars.  This book hadn't really caught my eye until the trailer for the movie came out and Tina Fey was in it.  I thought if Tina was in the movie, then the book had to be good.  I really enjoyed this book.  It felt very similar to the the movie, The Family Stone.  A lot of dry, darker type of humor but great nonetheless.

RECIPE: HOMEADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT

A few months ago, I was thinking of ways to cut little costs around my home.  One of those things that came to mind was laundry detergent.  I was running through bottles of Tide and never really thinking that my clothes were getting clean.

You know that damp, musty, kinda sorta BO smell that clothes can get if you leave them in the washer too long or they are just that old??  I never, ever thought that my detergent was truly getting that stench out.

So, a little Pinterest search and a little messing around on my own, wa-la I have my own homemade laundry detergent.  Saving those pennies on things that I really want, instead of need.

This stuff is pretty fantastic too!  That said stench above, not a problem.  My clothes come out fresh and cleany, clean.  Plus, I don't have to add in Oxiclean or Downy Unstoppables because it's in each scoopful!  Also, this stuff is so, so easy to make.  Think I got this batch done in about 20 minutes.

Ingredients:
55 oz box of Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda
4lb box Arm and Hammer Baking Soda
76 oz box of Borax
2 Zote Bars (it's pink)
3 lbs. OxiClean
13 oz Downy Unstoppables (any scent)

Also needed, for first time only:
5 gallon bucket with lid
air tight container for storing a good portion of detergent in (you don't want to be digging in the 5 gallon bucket with each load of laundry)
2 T scoop (I use a 1/4 C measuring cup and fill it about 1/2 or 3/4 full each load)
Blender

Combine Borax, Washing Soda, Baking Soda in a 5 gallon bucket or really large bowl.  I actually mixed mine in the bucket and then dumped it into a bowl.

Cut each Zote bar in half, long ways.  Each half, then cut into 4ths, making each bar into 8 pieces.

Take one piece of Zote and cupful of mixed ingredients and blend until powder is light pink or Zote bar is mixed in really well with the powder.

After blending, dump into 5 gallon bucket.  Add in Downy Unstoppables and mix.  Store in 5 gallon bucket.

All in all, I probably spent around $35 dollars for all the products that will last my family months.  This recipe easily gets you about 250-300 loads of laundry.  If you love math, like I, that's about 12 to 14 cents per load.

Enjoy!

P.S.  I have an HE washer and it works great!

SPRING HAPPENINGS

Spring you say? Why yes, me say.  I feel like to do this little journal/blog/diary of mine it's due justice is document all the things that I have missed these last six or seven months.  Thing is, I have a really bad memory and a chronic sufferer of CRS so I really need to get better at this whole experience the experience then write about it the next day.  Then I wouldn't have to rely on my memories, I can rely on my words of my experience.  As Quinn says, "BAM", break through.

Anyways, here are some pictures from the spring.

Sister and brother in law came to play

Went to the park quite a few times.

Took my niece and Quinn to the Children's Museum in Bettendorf, Subway for lunch and the park for dessert.

I just love a good black and white picture...don't you?
